important blobs

This was the final night of the show – it was quite late 10pm or so and I spent a lot of the night taking these pictures below. The reason I am saying this is because no one really got to see it. First one is hidden, I suppose because I didn’t know how it would go. This is the kind of thing that suits itself well to an event, and this is how my shows in the future would be. An intro with some work done, but the show itself, over the course of one or two weeks becomes a work in progress and the finished piece is lit up, I take pictures of it and it becomes the focal point for an event. Audio would always play in important role. Blobs as well.

So another point that I want to make is that the work was really done to be shown online, here. Another project very like that is NVHT-3 (it was a dark and stormy night) – it was an absolute misery (kind of the point) to look at when it was up…..but that’s another story.

It was fun doing this one alone. It was a quiet night in Arrowhead park, late summer, pretty pleasant, so I really enjoyed finishing up and taking some pictures after the sun had set. Pretty warm and lovely.

The effect created by these blobs or I mean strings was created by using two different types of string – one which glowed brightly under black light and one that did not, thereby making these arbitrarily formed structures appear the float in the air.

What is most important about this to me is the procedure, the algorithm (human generated algorithm). The process. With this structure, tension was used. A line would be tied connecting one point to another and the a string would be tied to the middle of that string in order to pull that first line tight, creating a ‘Y’ shape. I just kept repeating this wherever I could fit them – that was the only criteria. And this is the key part – how much can the tendency towards composing be reduced or attenuated by mundane, repetitive tasks – just filling an area with a filling algorithm.

By bypassing the intention to exercise aesthetic judgement, it is my assertion, that the activity can serve as a more direct conduit to living essence – character, mood, ‘presence’. DMA (direct memory access) for the spirit and soul. I am sure this is meditation 101 but regardless, it is in this state of mundane activity and the mind drifts, and it is during those moments that the most information is able to most directly be communicated – and recorded by this artwork. So the artworks, this one and most, if not all of them are ‘documents of psyche’ – readings. The processes I develop are designed to serve this end and the results they produce are meant to be understood and interpreted in this terms.

So all of these little objects, little floating 3-D line drawings, branches, and networks are what I like to call ‘figures of conciousness’ or just figures. Like an infinite alphabet of thought structures.
