This project ‘grew’ out of the 3D trees series. In the 3D trees series, the exercise was to recreate the tree form in an abstract and imaginary way – not based on the dimensions of an actual tree or species of tree in particular. Five trees into the series, I started drawing the roots which really lead to this form which simply is branches extending in all directions, up/down, left/right, front/back. So what you see is here is what I consider to be the most ‘inevitable’ form that develops when the strategy is the draw branches that extend in all directions. Something about the inevitablity of this form leads me to believe that the fact that they look so much like neurons is no coincidence.
